Is it only phones that are going to be connected through 5G?

In a word, no. While it's true that mobile devices will be first to adopt and benefit from 5G connectivity, by 2023 we’ll see it in more than half of all connected things. 

Not only will there be an explosion of new types of connected devices with much higher bandwidth demands like AR/VR, smart home appliances and industrial wearables, but also use cases for wireless connectivity will continue to expand beyond our phones. Do I need a new phone?

There are many things to consider when deciding whether or not you need a new phone. The first thing to ask yourself is, Why do I want a new phone?

How does this affect us as consumers?

5G service is expected to launch in February 2019, so it’s still a while before you can jump on board. But, if your next device purchase includes a contract with a data plan, you might be tempted to wait until then to buy something new. 

You may have heard that once we switch over to 5G service, smartphone prices will go down. That’s only true to an extent—5G phones will probably be cheaper than current models, but we don’t anticipate huge drops in price. If anything, 5G devices are likely to cost more up front because of all of their extra features and functionality. 

If you want to save money on your next phone, now would be a good time to buy one of last year’s top-tier devices at a discount (assuming they haven't been phased out). It's also worth noting that most carriers are offering trade-in programs for old smartphones as well as subsidies for buying new ones, which could help offset some of those costs. 

Plus, keep in mind that many carriers offer payment plans for their customers who want to spread out their monthly payments over several months or years. So, even though 5G phones will probably be pricier than 4G devices when they first hit shelves, there are plenty of ways to make them affordable. If I'm not using a contract?: Even if you aren't using a traditional two-year service agreement, there are other things to consider when choosing between 4G and 5G technology. 

For example, it’s important to think about how long you intend to use your phone—if you're planning on keeping yours for five years or longer, paying more upfront for better battery life or improved camera quality might be worth it. The same goes for waterproofing—if you tend to get wet often (for example, during water sports), opting for a water-resistant model is probably going to pay off in the long run. 

You should also keep an eye out for new features that will make your life easier. For instance, smartphones with fingerprint sensors are convenient because they let you unlock your device without having to remember any passwords or PIN numbers. But newer models have facial recognition software that lets you access them with just a glance at their screens. 

Some devices even come with built-in iris scanners that can recognize specific features of your eyes—and they're so secure that even law enforcement agencies can't break into them! As we move forward into 2019, these types of advancements will become increasingly common as manufacturers compete against each other to produce high-quality products at lower prices.


What features can I expect from my new device?

The main advantages of 5G are speed and connectivity. If you’re currently on a 2G or 3G network, you will notice that web pages load faster and streaming services like Netflix run smoother when they use 5G. 

The increase in speed also means that transferring data is easier than ever before. That includes sharing pictures or videos to your friends and family, backing up your hard drive, or uploading your latest gaming sessions directly to YouTube. 

In fact, with 5 Gbps download speeds (1 Gbps uploads), you could upload an 8 GB video in less than five seconds! However, not every feature from 4G LTE is supported in 5G technology. For example, there aren’t any current plans for 5G networks to support VoLTE, so if you rely on HD calling for work or personal reasons, it might be best to stick with a device that supports 4G LTE. When it comes down to it though, one of our favorite features about 5G is its backwards compatibility. 

While other wireless standards have been completely phased out as new ones were introduced—such as switching from dial-up internet access to DSL—5G phones can still connect using older technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE). 

This means that even if your area doesn't have a 5G connection available yet, you can still take advantage of some of its benefits by connecting through these other methods! And since most of us carry multiple devices around all day, being able to seamlessly switch between them without having to constantly re-pair them is pretty great too.

Essentially, we can expect better service and faster speeds with devices that utilize 5G connections.
