I absolutely love my job. It challenges me every day and helps me grow as a person. I feel like I am making a difference in the world, and that is very important to me. I also love the people I work with.
They are all incredibly talented and dedicated to their work. We have a lot of fun together, and I am really proud of what we accomplish as a team. The things I don't like about my Job: Sometimes it can be challenging to balance my work life with other aspects of my life.
My friends often tell me they rarely see me anymore because I'm always working so hard. The other thing that bothers me is the commute time. Sometimes it takes hours just to get home at night because traffic can be so bad around here during rush hour.
What I wish more people knew about this company: One thing I wish more people knew about this company is how committed we are to hiring diverse candidates, even if they don't necessarily meet all our qualifications on paper. Diverse teams do better work, which means everyone benefits. Another thing that sets us apart from many others is our focus on improving workplace wellness.
You might not realize it but stress levels around here are through the roof, so we've made some changes to make sure everybody stays healthy. The Skills I’m Learning
I’m currently in my second year of medical school and I absolutely love it. I’ve always been interested in the medical field, but I didn’t know if it was the right fit for me.
Turns out, it is! I’m learning so much and I feel like I’m really making a difference. Every day, I learn something new that I can use to help my patients.
We also spend a lot of time training doctors on how to treat patients as they enter their most vulnerable state. It’s such an amazing feeling knowing that you have made someone healthier and happier.
I want everyone to be able to experience this feeling, which is why I volunteer at our local hospital on Saturdays.
There are a lot of elderly people who come in who don’t have family nearby, or those who just need some extra attention from a caring person.
Some people come in with serious illnesses; others just need help recovering from surgery or even their first broken bone.
Volunteering at the hospital has opened my eyes because these are things I never knew about before coming here- which leads me back to why being an EMT would be great for me!
The hours are flexible, there is plenty of room for advancement, and I would be doing something meaningful every day. Not only that, but I could use what I learned volunteering at the hospital to help train other EMTs.
I also want to start up a neighborhood watch group around my house. You know how sometimes you see signs saying Report suspicious activity to police?
Well, there hasn’t been one around where we live for years and I think it might deter crime or make people more aware of their surroundings.
My neighbors seem excited by the idea and said they'll spread the word among their friends. Now all I need to do is buy a bunch of signs, get them laminated, then hang them all over town. Easy peasy!
The People I’m Meeting
The Health Department is a great place to work if you want to make a difference in people’s lives.
I’ve met so many amazing people here who are passionate about their work and truly care about helping others. It’s been really inspiring and makes me excited to come to work every day.
The Work I’m Doing (eight sentences): I’m really enjoying the work I’m doing here at the Health Department. I feel like I’m making a difference and that my work is having a positive impact on people’s lives.
I love being able to help others and seeing the difference that our work can make. Every day is different and there’s always something new to learn, which keeps things interesting.
I’ve learned so much about public health issues, but more importantly I am learning how I can make a difference as part of the solution.
There have been moments when it feels overwhelming or discouraging, but these days are few and far between now that I know what it means to be an essential member of the team fighting for better health outcomes across New York City. That feeling—that knowledge—makes everything worth it.
The People I'm Meeting: In this department, we take pride in all of the services we provide. Whether you’re working on immunizations, hospitalization rates, lead testing or prescription drug fraud, each one contributes to improving New Yorkers' health status and quality of life. That motivates us all to do our best work everyday.
The Work I'm Doing: Every day at the Health Department is exciting because each project has its own set of challenges that only become surmountable through collaboration and innovation.
Projects range from reducing obesity rates among minority populations in Brooklyn to creating a safer medication supply chain. With such varied tasks, it's hard not to find your niche.
You might specialize in hospitalization rates or lead poisoning prevention; whether you're tackling healthcare policymaking or leading citywide initiatives, it doesn't matter—every task is vital and important.
With such variety comes challenge: How will I grow? What skills should I develop? Should I broaden my horizons by taking on a new role? But with mentors and peers readily available, these questions don't need answers today.
My Tips and Tricks to Succeed in this Job
The Health Department is a great place to work, and I'm here to help you find your perfect fit within the company. Here are my tips and tricks to succeed in this job:
1. Research the company and its values before applying. Fit is important in any job, but especially so in the Health Department where our values are essential to our work.
2. Highlight your relevant skills and experience in your cover letter and resume. We want to see that you have what it takes to excel in this role.
3. Prepare for your interviews by practicing answers to common questions. Show us that you're excited about the opportunity and ready to hit the ground running.
4. Be yourself! It sounds cliché, but if we hire someone who doesn't mesh well with the team then we won't be able to get their best work out of them.
5. Ask good questions during your interview - not just about pay or benefits, but about how well we'd expect you to perform on the job too. That way we can tell whether or not you'll be a good fit for our team!
6. Send an updated CV as soon as possible after getting an offer from us - it helps show our hiring managers how interested you are in this position and speeds up their decision-making process so they can find someone else who is just as excited as you are.
