My Experience at FC Comicon 2017
I attended Forest City ComiCon 2017 and had a blast. There were so many panels, exhibitors, and people attending the event that I couldn't get bored of any one thing. Between Artist Alley shopping and checking out the Exhibitor Hall, there was always something to do or see. You could find anything from comics to original artwork to collectibles and everything in between. In addition to panels on topics like What's your favorite comic book character? and What are some good series for kids?, they also hosted an artist workshop on how to draw dragons. My personal favorite experience at FC Comicon was trying out some VR games, including The Brookhaven Experiment which made me jump when zombies attacked me from all angles. All in all, it's hard not to have fun at FC Comicon.
The next event is Saturday November 18th from 10am-5pm at the Rockton Fairgrounds! Be sure to check them out if you're looking for some family friendly events with a geeky twist. Tickets can be purchased online before the day of the event or you can stop by the information booth when you arrive. Prices range from $7 for children 12 and under to $10 for adults. Check their website for more information.
One of my favorite parts about FC Comicon is that everyone I met was incredibly nice, helpful, and friendly. From staff members who were eager to answer questions, to artists who explained how they became involved in art or comics, no one ever showed any sign of condescension or rudeness, which I'm grateful for because it's made me feel like a valued member of our community instead of an outsider as often happens at larger conventions like Fan Expo Canada. I've never been to a con where everyone has been so welcoming, even those I've never met before. They just made me feel like I belonged there and it really put me at ease to attend the convention without worrying about feeling self conscious or weird around other attendees. Which isn't easy for someone who doesn't always enjoy being social. So thank you to everyone who helped make my first Forest City ComiCon such a memorable experience! It was great meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones. Until next year, happy nerding!
As an aspiring artist myself, I also greatly enjoyed seeing many different styles from various kinds of artwork on display throughout the event. No matter what kind of art you prefer, whether anime or realistic pencil sketches, there will be something for you to look at at FC Comicon 2017 if traditional mediums are your thing. There’s also options if digital media is more your thing as many vendors have things like plushies and t-shirts designed by themselves using programs like Photoshop or Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling.
The Opportunities of FC Comicon 2018
The Comicon celebrates the many ways in which comic books and graphic novels are created, from artists and illustrators to editors and publishers. Hundreds of different exhibitors come together each year for an experience that blends education with fun. For those who want to work in comics but don't know where to start, a number of guests have been invited who have done everything from illustrate, write, publish and edit their own projects. The old adage you can't create what you can't imagine is never more true than at FC Comicon 2018. Attendees will be able to learn how they too can become part of this flourishing industry by meeting people behind some of the most popular titles around. They'll also be able to meet local creators and find out how they got started with interactive workshops, panels, competitions and more on both days (Saturday November 3rd & Sunday November 4th).
Founded in 2012 by Tom Brennan, FC Comicon has become one of Western Pennsylvania's largest pop culture conventions showcasing talented creators from all over the world. The convention will take place at the David L Lawrence Convention Center and feature cosplay contests, artist alley tables, live entertainment and much more. With vendors like Kotobukiya, Artist Alley featuring over 200 tables, a celebrity autograph area sponsored by Robot Entertainment to name just a few, attendees won't run out of things to do. There will also be plenty of activities going on throughout the weekend for kids. Kids 10 and under get in free with a paying adult when accompanied by an adult aged 18 or older; adults get into FC Comicon 2018 for only $10 if they dress up as their favorite comic book character. Children 14 and under dressed as Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Superman or Supergirl will receive a ticket for free entry. All children must enter through the designated children's entrance located in the back of the building.
The two-day event will include panels hosted by notable personalities including Patrick Rothfuss (the Kingkiller Chronicle), Walter Simonson (Thor) Amy Chu (Revolutionary Girl Utena), Jim Zubkavich (Wayward), Joe Caramagna(Superman: Action Comics) and others discussing topics such as design process, writing tips, pitching ideas and other topics central to working in comics.
